By now, it’s no surprise that the Covid-19 Pandemic has turned everyone’s lives upside down – especially in their careers. So many people have lost their jobs, filed for unemployment, and are frantically looking for their next career role.

According to Catalyst, a weekly report on unemployment claims states that 48 million people in the United States have filed for unemployment for the first time since mid-march 2020. The Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy reports that the United States has lost 20.6 million jobs since mid-march. The high levels of unemployment and job losses have not been seen since the Great Depression era.

Though the numbers continue to rise, Empire Workforce Solution is available nationwide to elevate some of your career path concerns. Here are 7 valuable tips to help you find your dream job during the pandemic:

Update Your Resume

As a job seeker, this is one of the most important things you can do to find the perfect career path. A resume or CV can be best described as a career summary giving employers an informative detail about your work history, experiences, accomplishments, skills, and education.

It is best practice to update your resume at least twice a year. Make sure to have the most relevant/clear information at the top of your resume and format your resume and experiences to align with the job position you are applying for. If you need help revising your resume, check out some of these helpful resume tips from Professor Heather Austin.

Keep Applying

During the time of Covid-19, please do not assume that employers are not looking for applicants just because everyone is at home. This is the time where employers are looking for applicants to hire, so you have to keep looking and applying.

Even when you feel like you have applied to so many places and are not hearing back from anyone, keep applying to similar job roles. Also, it’s not enough to just apply. Take things a step further and reach out to job prospects at least one week after applying so that you can check up on your application. You can even use LinkedIn to help you find hiring managers and recruiters that you can contact to inquire about your application.

Read the Job Description!

This part is so important. When you’re busy applying to multiple jobs, please do not just glance over the job title and think that you know what this job will entail. It’s so easy to read the job title and think that you can do the job. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work like that because when you land the job, you might end up realizing that you hate the job and might quit.

Make sure to carefully read the description of the job and think about how you qualify or have completed the role in your past work. Additionally, it is also important to read the description carefully, so you do not miss out on specific job qualifications or educational requirements that companies are looking for. You do not want to waste your time applying nor do you want to waste the employer’s time while reviewing your application.

Think Positively

When looking for a new job, remember to approach the experience with a positive mindset and know that you will give it your all in finding the right job. It’s okay to know that not everyone will say yes to your application.

In fact, prepare to hear a lot of NOs before you get that one YES. If you struggle with job rejection, know that the situation worked out for the best and on the other side of your life, new opportunities have opened up for you to find the perfect job tailor made just for you. So, keep going!

Be Flexible

There will be moments in your job search where you apply for a job you don’t want to be in. Know that things are not always permanent and remind yourself that this is a job that will keep you steady for the moment. Be open-minded to applying to jobs positions that you’ve never considered before. Considerable job options to look into include side gigs, freelance jobs, contract jobs or even temp jobs.

Though the flexibility is key to finding jobs, please be careful of the places you go to when applying. Now more than ever, so many people are out of work and are struggling to make ends meet. So, be wary of potential job scams using fake job postings to target job seekers.

Network & Make Friends

Now, I know what you’re thinking. How is it possible to network and attend job fairs at a time like this? Well, chances are you never know where your next job opportunity is going to come from. So, seek out virtual job fairs like this one or look for virtual job networking events here.

Who knows, maybe at one of these events, you may even meet a life-long friend that can help you in finding your dream job. Another option to consider is to ask close family and friends to inform you of any job postings or if they hear of any hiring opportunities around the area. See if they know anyone that may be hiring at the moment.

Know Where to Look

As they say it’s who you know that helps you land the job, but it’s also where you look that helps a great deal. Some people prefer looking for jobs on LinkedIn, Monster, Glassdoor, ZipRecruiter, and Empire Workforce Solutions.
